Edward Elric (エドワード・エルリック, Edowādo Erurikku), the "Fullmetal Alchemist," the youngest State Alchemist in history, is the main protagonist of the series. He is nicknamed "Ed". He and his younger brother, Alphonse Elric, scour the world in search of the Philosopher's Stone, in the hopes of restoring their bodies. Edward lost his left leg in a failed attempt to revive his mother Trisha Elric using Alchemy, and lost his right arm in exchange for attaching Alphonse's soul to a suit of armor. Edward now employs the use of metal prosthetics, known as automail, as replacement limbs. Edward harbors a sharp sensitivity to his short height; a recurring gag in both anime series and the manga is for Edward to overly react to people that call him short. Romi Paku and Vic Mignogna voice him in the Japanese and English versions, respectively. At the end of the manga, it shows that he married Winry Rockbell and had two children.
Ed is shown to be hot-headed, stubborn and feirce; as well as overly-sensative to any remarks concerning his height. He oftentimes acts impulsively, but he is also completely self-less, showing concern as to using the Philospher's Stone for any alchemy, as it is made from the lives of many people. In the original anime, he gave his body and soul in exchange for Al's, showing his love for his brother. In the manga, he instead offers his ability to use Alchemy. Ed clings tightly to his beliefs, specifacally Equivalent Exchange, oftentimes quoting it--even during his proposal to Winry in the manga.
Ed also strives to never give up, even helping others in times when they need inspiration. In the first volume of the manga, he says to Rose, "Stand up and walk. Move. After all, you have two perfect legs to stand on," showing his own determination to never stop until he and Al regain their bodies.
